El hobbit (1937) funciona como introducción a la serie, y
El silmarillion (1977), como una "precuela. Situado en un pasado mítico, el inventivo relato describe la lucha entre los reinos del bien y del mal por la posesión de un anillo mágico que controla el equilibrio de poder en el mundo.
